The Devil Got A Bad Rap

Updated: Mar 23, 2021

Before Christians interjected their beliefs into the tarot cards, the game of tarrocia already existed. In many of the early decks, the 15th of 78 cards was the Daemon, an angelic or supernatural being acting as an intermediary between the spirit world of the gods and the physical world of humanity. Later tarotists chose artwork for this card depicting the negative aspect of the power of the Daemon, bondage. But not all bonds are bad! A bond is a connection; a tie; a relationship. Similar to the Hierophant in tarot, the Devil is a hook. Both are Earth Elements, representing life in our saturnine world.

To want something, to desire, is to imply a state of dis- satisfaction: not feeling satisfied. To be sated is to be satisfied, that is, content. The word "sated" and "Satan" have the same root word meaning: fulfillment. Being fulfilled is not a bad thing. It is bliss! It is temporary. . . .

In psychology, the term for this is homeostasis; a return to equilibrium. Balance. Moderation. We are in a continuous flux between desire and fulfillment, seeking restoration of our previous state of comfort. We look forward to all things being renewed, as in the spring, buds rejoice in the warm sunshine. Check out the pip cards below, where you see the Devil, a single letter, interacting with 3 of the Septenaries, double letters. 3 decans: equality, accomplishment, materialization.

The Adept's Tarot is saying to me, One needs desire to bring about equality, accomplishment and materialization. Desire makes the world go around, right? Let me know what you think in a comment. Learn more about Ayn, the 16th Hebrew letter associated with the Devil card, from my Blog post, "Secrets From The Letter y" by YL.
